Every one would like to have straight teeth and a beautiful smile, but the time commitment is sometimes a restriction. Some new techniques have addressed these concerns and made treatment possible in 1/4 to 1/2 of the normal treatment time. This technique (PAOO periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics) was developed by Dr. William Wilco. Dr. Wilco and Dr. Wright were residents together at WVU where they were both doing research on bone metabolism. Dr. Wilco expanded on this research and with his brother, a periodontist, and developed this unique treatment. It involves an outpatient surgical procedure and you will be seen by Dr. Wright every two weeks during the treatment. The outcome is as good if not better than traditional treatment. The treatment time is usually 6 to 10 months.
There is also another technique that accelerates bone metabolism as well but is more localized called "Propel." It utilizes a small surgical incision at the site in question to accelerate the bone metabolism. This is done by me under local anesthesia and takes about five minutes. It is very useful in select cases.
Please talk to Dr. Wright or his staff if this decrease in treatment time is important to you.
